BOCKFEST RETURNS MARCH 5 to 7 - PARADE - BLESSING OF THE BEER - MUCH MORE!

Cincinnati is the home to the world's oldest Bock festival, but many Cincinnatians are unaware of this tradition. If you are one of the unfortunate who have never attended a Bockfest (or who have but can't really remember that weekend) here's a quick primer. In the 1800s, Cincinnati was one of America's most prolific brewing cities. Cincinnatians drank more beer per capita than any city in the country, and Over-the-Rhine was at one point home to more than 18 breweries. A tradition developed among the breweries to release all of their bock beer on the same day. Bock beer is a rich, complex, robust lager that marks the end of the Winter brewing season and the beginning of Spring. More info on DRC Calendar or visit http://www.bockfest.com

BREWERY TOUR SET FOR WEEKEND OF MARCH 6 and 7

Prohibition Resistance Tour 2010 - March 6-7, 2010

Explore Cincinnati's rich brewing heritage, both above and below ground.

Each tour will start at Bockfest Hall, where participants will learn about the Brewery District and then travel to the Clyffside Brewery (also known as the Mohawk, Sohn, and Red Top Brewery). Here, a multimedia presentation will take participants back to 1888, when Cincinnati was one of the brewing centers of the country and beer was the backbone of Over-the-Rhine. We'll continue our tour past the remaining breweries on Brewer's Boulevard with such storied names such as Jackson, Moerlein, Lafayette, and Hudepohl. The next stop will be the Kauffman Brewery, where we'll hear about Cincinnati's beer barons and explore the massive subterranean lagering cellars under the building. A brief walk past the typical working class Italianate tenements will explore the typical Over-the-Rhine resident's life in 1888. The final stop will be the Crown Brewery (also known as the Schmidt Brothers Brewery). Here we'll learn how Prohibition closed most of the Cincinnati breweries and dealt a devastating blow to Over-the-Rhine. This tour will include a visit to the recently rediscovered and reopened lagering cellars and tunnel underneath McMicken Avenue, which have been sealed off for 50 years and never before opened to the public.

ROOT ON YOUR FAVORITE NEIGHBORHOOD TEAM IN CINCINNATI’S CRAZIEST RACE - MARCH 6

3nd Annual Cinciditarod - Scheduled for Saturday March 6

Cinciditarod is named for, and in tribute to, the Iditarod, a brutal 1,100 mile dog-sled race in Alaska. But instead of dogs, it's people, and instead of sleds, it's decorated shopping carts, and instead of Alaska, it's Cincinnati!

While physically attached to their grocery carts, teams push through a nearly five-mile course over the streets of downtown and surrounding areas, picking up items on a grocery list and stopping at five mandatory check points. A challenge awaits the team members at each checkpoint.

WHEN: The race is Saturday March 6. Check in starts at 10:30 a.m. and the race begins on Fountain Square at noon.

SPONSOR: New Horizons Credit Union

WHY: It’s fun, it’s crazy and it benefits the FreestoreFoodbank.

LEARN HOW TO REPORT A POTHOLE!

Crews are out in force to repair potholes identified on City Streets and will continue this effort in the days and weeks to come. While City employees identify a large number of potholes, Citizens are very helpful in identifying and reporting potholes found on our City streets.

WHEN REPORTING POTHOLES:

+ The best way to ensure that a pothole gets repaired in a timely manner in the City of Cincinnati is to call the City's customer service line and report them.

+ The customer service Center is staffed Monday through Friday form 7:00AM – 7:00PM. The number is 591-6000.

+ Descriptive information helps crews identify and respond quickly to requests for service:

--- How deep and how wide?

--- Is it near the northbound curb lane, or the middle of the road?

--- What is the nearest intersection or street address?

--- Is this pothole creating a hazardous situation?

HELP OUR CITIZENS BE COUNTED! US CENSUS NOW HIRING!

Don’t miss this opportunity! There will be a large number of positions available with the Census Bureau in the near future.

THANK YOU ST XAVIER CHURCH FOR SUPPORTING DOWNTOWN (& THE DRC) - WE LOOK FORWARD TO AUGUST 6!

The next Downtown Dash 5K and Block Party is already scheduled for the evening of Friday, August 6, 2010.

About the Dash:

The Secret & Old Spice Downtown Dash and Block Party, hosted each summer by St. Xavier Church in downtown Cincinnati, has distributed proceeds from the 2009 event to six downtown charities. The gifts fulfill a commitment made by the Dash to support the downtown charities which make that neighborhood a better place to live, work and play.

The Rev. Eric Knapp, pastor of St. Xavier Church, thanked the volunteers and participants of the block party for making possible these donations to the church’s partners in the downtown neighborhood.

“These organizations share a common mission and vision with the parish of St. Xavier: to assist those in need, to educate and to care for the whole person,” Knapp said. “We are thrilled to be able to collaborate with downtown organizations whose mission is consistent with ours and who strive to improve the downtown community by meeting the real and basic needs of our neighborhood.”

Each of the six charities received $500 of the proceeds from the 2009 event. They include Crossroad Health Center , St. Peter Claver Latin School, the Peaslee Neighborhood Center in Over-the-Rhine, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, the DOWNTOWN RESIDENTS COUNCIL and the Drop Inn Center .

The 2009 block party, the third annual, was better than ever. More than 400 runners took part in the challenging Downtown Dash 5K race into Eden Park and back down the hill to the downtown finish line. About 30 kids took part in the first ever Kids Dash. Thousands more stayed after the races for live music from the Rum Runners, a cornhole tournament, food from traditional Cincinnati restaurants and Christian Moerlein beer. http://www.downtowndash.org
